Economist Saulos Chilima has been appointed new managing director for Zain Malawi Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of India’s Bharti Airtel, with effect from August 1 2010.

Born on February 12 1973, Chilima, who holds a bachelor of social science (economics) and a master of arts degree in economics both from the University of Malawi’s Chancellor College, has become the first Malawian to head the cellphone network operator in its 11-year history which dates back to the days of Celtel.

He has taken over from Fayaz King who has since been reassigned to Zain Zambia in the same position.

Chilima’s immediate task as Zain Malawi boss is to oversee the brand transition of the company from Zain to Airtel later this year.

“I would like to thank the board of Airtel for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading a dynamic team of individuals as we move forward to consolidate and position this new global brand in Malawi. Let me also take this opportunity to thank Mr King for supporting me over the last two years and for his wise leadership,” he said.

Chilima, who joined Zain Malawi in September 2006 as sales and distribution director, a position he held until his promotion, brings with him a wealth of experience spanning a combined 15 years in telecommunications, banking and the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector.

Previously, Chilima has held senior sales and marketing positions at Unilever and the Coca Cola distribution company, the Bottling and Brewing Group Limited (BBGL) after a stint in banking at the Leasing and Finance Company (LFC), a subsidiary of publicly-listed FMB Bank.

During his stay at Zain Malawi, Chilima, among other things, has been credited with growing the business by pioneering award-winning merchandising standards, including driving the Zain’s Payphone Micro-Finance initiative, growing the corporate segment and increasing Zain’s point of sale outlets across Malawi.
